This is the time of year where everyone starts coming out with official lists. These includes the hottest toys for the holiday season, predictions of the hottest trends for 2010 and the hottest executives. There is even lists for ‘at-risk’ sites.

First, let’s take a closer look at a local example. This morning, I entered a local bagel shop. I glanced at a magazine rack near the door and on the front cover of the November issue of OC Metro was “The Hot 25” -- Platinum Edition. It encouraged readers to find out what some of our first “Hot 25 are up to now at OCmetro.com”

On a larger scale, the World Monuments Fund recently came out with its own ‘watch’ list. It includes dozens of cultural heritage sites at risk in 47 countries for 2010.

Like I said, there is a list for everyone and everything.

MediaWeek was not going to be left out of the end of year list craze and this week, posted their 2009 Digital Media Hotlist. In honor of David Letterman, we will count ‘em down from 10 to one. Each link to a Digital Media company/site will take you to the MediaWeek review page.

1. Addicting Games
9. Federated Media
1. WSJ.com
7. Bing
6. Huffington Post
5. iPhone
4. Google
3. Twitter
2. Hulu
1. Facebook

Newspapers: Going! Going! Gone?

To truly understand where the traditional printed newspaper business is headed, all you have to do is check out the two charts listed chart below.

I saw the first chart, “Weekday Newspaper Circulation” on The Awl a few days ago. If it is indeed accurate, it shows the quickening demise of the printed product. The second is a comparison of online newspaper website traffic I ran via compete.com Here we looked at the The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the LA Times and The New York Times

According to “The Awl’s” chart, the Los Angeles Times has lost half of its circulation since 1990 and the The Daily News has taken a considerable hit as well. Amazingly, the New York Post seems to be even in the past 20 years. Hmmm.

If you look at the second chart, which compares unique visitors, people are still reading the news. Look at the recent, explosive growth of the New York Times. The number of visitors for each business reaches into the millions. In the not to distant future, we predict that you will begin making micro-payments for news you wish to receive.

Just by watching the numbers you can see the activity on the web for topics such as “New blogs posted”, “Videos watched on YouTube” and “New Twitters users.”

There are 21 different counters in all.

The application reminds me of the old billboards in large cities like New York and Chicago that counted the number of deaths from people smoking cigarettes or the mounting national debt. Now folks, you can count the social media activity.
